There are many nursing jobs, but which one is best for you? Here are descriptions of four types of nursing jobs: registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, certified nurse assistant, and nursing supervisor.

Registered Nurse:

A registered nurse (RN) is a highly skilled professional who provides care for patients in hospitals, clinics, and other health care settings. RNs typically have a degree in nursing and several years of experience working in the medical field. They must pass a certification exam to be a RN.

Licensed Practical Nurse:

A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is a registered nurses’ aide who has completed an approved licensing program. LPNs help provide basic patient care by performing tasks such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and walking patients. They may also provide basicMedications and treatments. LPNs typically have two years of experience as an aide or another related position before they can apply to become an LPN.

Certified Nurse Assistant:

A certified nurse assistant (CNA) is a registered nurses’ aide who has completed an accredited certificate program. CNAs help provide clinical supervision to Registered Nurses while providing direct patient care. They perform tasks such as wound cleaning, giving injections and drawing blood, preparing medications, and assisting with surgeries. CNAs typically have one year of experience as an aide or another related position before they can apply to become a CNA.

Nursing supervisors

Nursing supervisors are responsible for directing and supervising nursing staff in the provision of quality patient care. They ensure that patients receive high-quality nursing care while under their watch, and take measures to ensure safe and effective patient care. Nursing supervisors also ensure that nurses are following protocols and providing the best possible care for their patients.

Registered Nurse Job Duties and Responsibilities

An RN’s typical day varies depending on a number of factors, including the location they work in, both geographically and in terms of the type of facility; the size of the staff and nursing team; and the population they serve. RNs working in a physician’s office, for example, may take on some administrative work, while registered nurses working in a hospital are less likely to do this kind of work.

No matter how broad a registered nurse’s duties may be, they’re typically responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assessing, observing, and speaking to patients
  • Recording details and symptoms of patient medical history and current health
  • Preparing patients for exams and treatment
  • Administering medications and treatments, then monitoring patients for side effects and reactions
  • Creating, implementing, and evaluating patient care plans with the medical team
  • Performing wound care, such as cleaning and bandaging them
  • Assisting in medical procedures as needed
  • Operating and monitoring medical equipment
  • Drawing blood, urine samples, and other body fluids for lab work

Depending on the location and work environment, registered nurses may experience a variety of daily roles and responsibilities. Your pay will as well. In the US in 2019, the median annual wage for registered nurses was $74,000 ($35-36/hr). However, the salary you receive can differ greatly depending on the state or territory you choose to work in.
