Due to the desire of the then-ruler of Dubai, HH Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Dubai International Airport opened on September 30, 1960, with just a little terminal building and a 1,800-meter-long runway made of compacted sand that could accept aircraft as large as the Douglas DC-3.

The airport only handled a few thousand passengers in its initial year due to its poor facilities and the fact that Dubai had relatively few tourists at the time. At the time, it was a long cry from the commercial hub, leisure destination, and luxury lifestyle destination that it is today.

A year before the oil that would change the Emirate was discovered off Dubai, DXB opened its first asphalt runway in 1965. The rest of the decade saw a number of minor improvements.

These included extending the terminal structure, adding lights to the airfield, and erecting aircraft hangars for the airport’s few airline clients.

The now asphalt runway was extended to 3,800m, new taxiways and an apron were erected, and ILS technology was installed to enable DXB to handle aircraft up to the size of the B747. Other new infrastructure added in the 1970s included a three-story terminal and the first ATC tower in the Middle East.

It is fair to say that DXB hasn’t really looked back since the establishment of Emirates airline in 1984, which was followed by the building of a second runway 12 months later. The home-based carrier of DXB is now one of the largest airlines in the world, with a fleet of over 250 aircraft that includes 114 A380-800s.

Since then, there have been significant expansions to the infrastructure, including Terminal 2 (1998), Concourse C (2000), Terminal 3 (2008), Concourse A (2013), the first facility specifically designed to accommodate the A380, and Concourse D (2014). (2016).
