Bird Flu in California USA ,Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, has been forced to issue a state of emergency due to a recent outbreak of bird flu.
This particular outbreak has led to the infection of 34 citizens in the state. It appears to have originated from cows on dairy farms in Southern California and the affected persons are reported to have contacted the cows.
The state is now deploying testing and monitoring systems and has also issued protective equipment to staff on dairy farms. At the moment, there are no signs of the disease spreading from one person to another in California.
While Avian influenza A (H5N1) is a virus most severely affecting birds, it is also noted to affect humans and other animal species. Wild birds were the first record holders of the virus in the United States. That would be in 2022 and as expected the presence of the virus was identified in California. By March 2024 the virus was found in dairy cows in the state, and the specific month of October the same year human infection was first reported in dairy farm workers to be precise.
Infection in human hosts is described to range from mild, which includes redness and eye pain, to more serious conditions which may develop to pneumonia and difficulties in breathing. Most cases have been mild, but in Louisiana, there was one severe case the axiom reported in December 2024.
In response to the outbreak, California has developed the most extensive testing and monitoring system in America and has also provided millions of personal protective equipment (PPE) including masks, gloves, and eye protection to employees on dairy and poultry farms.
